Takuya Umedachi PhD
He is a robotics researcher who builds robots utilizing deformable/flexible materials, such as textile and rubber, inspired by the bodies and movements of soft-bodied organisms. He was born in 1980, and he received Ph.D. in the Department of Engineering from Tohoku University in 2009. From 2012 to 2016, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Tufts University in Boston, USA, and started to develop caterpillar-like robots with Prof. Barry Trimmer. From 2016 to 2019, he was a Project Lecturer at the University of Tokyo. From 2019, he became an associate professor at the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology, Shinshu University, and launched Umedate Laboratory. He has received Living Machines 2012 Best Paper Award, Ubicomp 2019 Best Demo Award, JAFOE 2021 Best Speaker Award, etc.
